本系列片模拟大灾难后，10名不同行业的人组成的小团体努力求生的经历。设定了各种场景，考验人们的生存能力。本片有一定的真实性，最重要的是从一个新的角度教会大家如果利用各种工具在城市废墟中生存下去，并且不断改善自己的生存环境 《重建人类社会》（The Colony）邀请10位自愿者接受生存测试。这10位自愿者的成长背景与专业知识，几乎涵盖了社会上各个层面。节目中，他们将被隔离在一个模拟市区环境内长达两个月，目的是建立一个适合人类居住的社会。在没有电力、自来水和通讯设施的情况下，他们只能依靠本身的技能，及于附近找到工具与物资延续生命。
